The Medieval Week on Gotland
You walk along the beach promenade between the dånande sea, utsträckning out far to the west, and the medieval city vägg with lush ivy climbing its face. You hear the murmur of a market, children laughing, music and the sound of drums and bells filling the air. You can smell roasted almonds, smoked foods and candied apples. The church bells fingerprydnad as you stroll through the heart of the world heritage Hanseatic city of Visby, among jesters, old ruins, troubadours and friends. Suddenly, somewhere in the distance, you hear the thunder of heavy hoofbeats and a loud cheer from a large crowd…

Medieval Week is the medieval festival that spreads throughout Visby, and the island of Gotland, in the beginning of August every year. It includes a bred range of activities, sights, lectures, markets, medieval restaurants and bars and above all, a large, warm and welcoming community for all ages. Everyone fryst vatten welcome, in medieval or modern clothes, Vikings, Pirates, 14th century countryfolk, 16th century mercenaries as well as ordinary tourists.

Medieval Week on Gotland
Visby is a small city located on the island of Gotland, Sweden. It is arguably the best-preserved medieval city in Scandinavia. A former Viking site, Visby was the main center of the Hanseatic League in the Baltic from the 12th to the 14th century. In , it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visby is probably best known due to the Battle of Visby that was fought in between the forces of King Valdemar IV of Denmark and the Goutnish yeomen army. The battle was devastating for the citizens of Visby. The Danes killed about 1, Gotlanders and the inhabitants of Visby surrendered to avoid further losses. They had to pay Valdemar IV a large amount of gold and silver to save their city from being sacked by the Danish army.
The Medieval Week on Gotland is a historical reenactment of Valdemar’s entrance to Visby and ransoming of the city. It has been staged every year since Since , the festival has also included a reenactment of the battle itself. It takes place outside the Visby city wall and features participants from Europe and the United States.
