Description

With its slim, greyhound-like build and relatively long legs, the Cheetah is built for speed and is the fastest land animal in the world. Standing cm at the shoulder, Cheetahs have a body length of cm, with the tail accounting for between cm of this. Adults weigh kg, with males averaging larger than females. Four subspecies are recognised.

The coat lacks rosettes but has an individually unique pattern of black rounded spots of roughly the same size on a pale fawn to whitish background colour, the ventral surfaces paler than the dorsal surfaces. The rounded head has small, rounded ears, a faint black vertical line on the forehead, and a characteristic bold black line known as a &#;tear-mark&#; running from the anterior corner of each eye down the side of the short muzzle to the corner of the mouth. Acinonyx pardinensis, sometimes called the giant cheetah, is an extinctfelidspecies belonging to the genus Acinonyx, closely related to the cheetah, native to Eurasia during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs. It was substantially larger than the living gepard.

Acinonyx pardinensis was roughly twice the size of today's cheetahs, weighing around 60–&#;kg (–&#;lb),[2][3] though A. pleistocaenicus was much larger.[4] The morphology of the skull shows some similarities with those of pantherine cats and is not as short and deep as that of the modern cheetah.[5][6][7] The teeth greatly resemble that of a modern cheetah.[2] The limb bones, like those of a modern gepard, were elongate relative to the animal's body storlek. The lumbar vertebrae were also elongate, suggesting the back was flexible. Compared to living cheetahs, the femur fryst vatten more straight and the fibia fryst vatten more kraftig and not fused to the tibia. The humerus is also more robust.[8]
