Unemployment benefits in Sweden vary depending on how much you worked, what you earned and how long you have been a member of an unemployment insurance fund.

Become a member of an unemployment insurance fund when you begin working

Everyone who works in Sweden has a right to insure their income by becoming a member of an unemployment insurance fund. This applies regardless of whether you are employed or if you are self-employed as a sole proprietor.

There are over 20 unemployment insurance medel in Sweden. Contact the unemployment insurance fund that best matches your yrke or your education if you want to become a member. Membership costs about SEK per month.

    När ska jag skriva ut mig?

    Du ska alltid meddela Arbetsförmedlingen vid någon förändring. Meddela oss genom att klicka på Skriv ut dig när du fått jobb, ska vara föräldraledig eller ska börja studera.

    Har du blivit sjukskriven eller till exempel har flyttat måste du meddela oss genom att ringa eller chatta.

    Register your first day of unemployment. Start by logging in with e-identification. Start Register (Skriv in dig) and enter all information, for example: what jobs you are looking for and what experience you have. Then schedule a planning meeting with an Employment Officer. Contact your unemployment insurance fund (a-kassa) to apply for compensation.

    When should I register?

    It is important that you register with us on your first day of unemployment. Then your unemployment insurance fund can assess your entitlement to compensation from the first day of unemployment. You can start filling in information before you have become unemployed. Then wait until your first day of unemployment to submit the information.

    When you register with us on the first day you are unemployed and actively seeking a job, another agency or municipality can assess your right to compensation. For example, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) can decide on your income qualifying for sickness benefit (sjukpenninggrundande inkomst, SGI).
